The Limit of Trust in Technology

Just because it looks authoritative doesn’t mean it’s accurate.

Today, I want to dive into a topic that’s becoming increasingly relevant: trusting technology and knowing how to use these tools wisely. We’re often told that AI and technology will eventually take over everything, freeing us from mundane tasks - maybe, seriously. While that maybe be true in the future, for now, we need to stay sharp and engaged, constantly applying our own critical thinking to these tools.

The New Tool: Napkin.ai

I recently stumbled upon a fascinating tool called Napkin.ai. It’s an AI-powered visualization tool that generates images from text prompts. At first glance, the graphics it produces are impressive—well-designed, fast and seemingly authoritative. This tool caught my eye, and I was tempted to use one of its graphics in this newsletter.

The Reality Check

However, as I absorbed the graphic it created, I noticed something unsettling. While the graphic appeared professional and convincing, it was misleading. It highlighted two concepts in a way that seemed too polished and precise to question; however, it was wrong! (in my humble opinion)

It made me realize an important lesson: just because something looks authoritative and is presented with cool visuals doesn’t mean it’s necessarily correct.

A Lesson in Critical Thinking

Not only that, but I'm going to challenge you to look at the graphic, and ask yourself, what is wrong? Does this make sense? Is it wrong? Misleading?

Also, I want you to notice something, even me telling you that this graphic is BS, there is still a side to you that believes it must be true to some degree - I mean come on, it's graphically designed and talks about high level topics!

Tell me, reply, what do you think it is?

you think I don't know what's going on?! Recently, I had an employee lying directly to my face!! At first I was a little confused why something didn't match up, but as I dug into it, I realized someone lied directly to my face. How could this be? How should I react? In that moment I realized I had a very clear choice. A choice that I had bene preparing for years. What I had been preparing for what how to react in situations that call for me to show up as a leader, a role model and not sink...

oasis on your journey We often come to the wrong conclusions when we think about ourselves. We think: If only I were more disciplined. We think: If only I had more energy. We think: If only... We think: I’ve been created without what I really need to succeed. If only I had a few more tools, a little more talent, a couple fewer flaws—then I’d feel like I’ve arrived. And sure, you’ve heard what I’m about to say before. But have you actually internalized it? There comes a moment when two paths...

warning: only pull when a real emergency. WHEN "THEY" WANT THE FIRE ALARM TO GO OFF One of my clients had a security audit done on his software, using one of his friends as a consultant. The consultant came back with a serious concern—a glaring vulnerability. The kind of thing that could maybe trigger a lawsuit or a full on system failure. My client’s response? “Okay, thanks for bringing this up. We'll have to address this immediately. How's the fam doing?” The consultant stared at him,...
